Having built and sold over 4 million Thunderbirds from the early 1950's to the mid- 2000's, Ford created a true automotive icon with the Thunderbird model. Mass market yes, but these days, Thunderbirds make a car collector's heart thob.
Ford Thunderbird wheels are a common restoration part. Early Thunderbirds ordered with the "Sports Roadster" package came with spoked Kelsey Hayes manufactured wire wheels, similar to this picture below.
Ford Thunderbird Wheels:
Three spoke spinner-caps are common to see on Thunderbird wire wheels of this vintage.
There are many selections of Thunderbird wheels including chromed disk styles, some with a fan blade or louvered look. We find that wire wheels are a popular option for those looking to go period-correct on the 1950's cars. They really add style and floss to the look of the Thunderbird.
Interesting to note about the Thunderbird: This car was launched by Ford to compete with the Chevy Corvette, and though the Thunderbird outsold the Corvette by several million units over the years, the Corvette is the car with true staying power. Today the Chevy Corvette has ALL the glory of a continued model line as well as a healthy uptake in motorsports, the aftermarket and collector car circles. Is the Ford Thunderbird dead?
